Taking Dogs in the B.C.? was created by Volcanogrrl
I've done a search and see that there seems to be a number of folks who take their dogs skiing with them. I love to take mine with me but, being new to the whole BC scene, was wondering what the basic etiquette is? I pretty much just try to keep them out of the way and have them walk the skin-track behind everybody (when they aren't off running around). The further we are from the parking lot/trailhead, the less likely they'll be wearing a leash. They don't bark much at all ('cept the husky, she's always "wooo wooo"ing), and we do the runs last so's nobody gets tripped up. Anybody have any other suggestions/rules/requests of dog owners?
Thanks!

One of my regular partners often brings his dog -- a big Akita. While Tundra can be a little exciteable, especially when we're just getting started for the day (you haven't seen cute until you've seen this dog doing mid-air spins with powder on his face), the single best thing about him is that my friend has trained him to be very responsive and walk either behind or beside him. It generally works, with a little regular reinforcement. So I guess I'd say lots of training to stay by your side or in one spot until you tell him it's okay to go.

Two other things to my friend's credit. He always goes out assuming that, if Tundra is having trouble, he'll peel off or adjust his plans. He also always picks up Tundra's "deposits", even when we're far enough back into the hills that most folks probably wouldn't.

They're not good for every tour, but I've gotten a real kick out of having Tundra along when we go out, largely because he's so well trained. And man, that dog can MOVE going down a steep corn slope...

A couple of obvious things: clean up the mess around the trailhead/parking lots and teach them to poo off the skin track.

More important -- learn to listen to your dog.  I skied for years with a Heeler-Lab mutt named "Appy" that got her name changed to "avi" because she could pick better lines that I could. Several times she refused to follow me down lines that subsequently broke on me while her chosen line provided no such thrills.

First let me say I LIKE dogs. One tends to see far more folks bringing their canine friends along to the bc, whether hiking or skiing, than ever before. You have to realize that the local furry and feathered residents of the bc see and smell the dogs as a predator and hide. This robs those of us one of the main rewards for visiting the bc--seeing these wonderful critters in their natural environments.
Just something to consider. ;)

I used to take my Bernese Mtn Dog with me all the time. He loved the BC, snow and also meeting new people. Prior to that, my early days of BC I borrowed by brothers Great Dane to go hiking around Chinook Pass. One time up Yakima Peak we came across a cougar about 100 yards away. I grabbed the dog before he noticed the cat, strapped on and we headed back down quick. I didn't want to see the dane and a cougar get into a wrestling match. I hope to have a new dog soon as I really miss bc hiking without my pal.

Early BC with my bro's dog

That's an excellent point and one of the biggest pooch-downsides...
