Central Cascades snow level? was created by Charlie Hagedorn
Is it worth obsessing through the work week about skiing Vesper Peak over the weekend, or should I look farther north (or higher up) for snow?

I skied Vesper in the fog a week and a half ago, June 10. Snow line was half way down the flats in Wurtz Basin, with continuous snow above this except for the south side traverse from Headlee Pass to the little lake. Since Wurtz basin doesn't receive much sun and collects avi debris in the winter, snow tends to linger there longer than nearby terrain at the same elevation. That said, if you want lots of snow this weekend, your best bet is certainly the North Cascades.

Would agree that going north to Baker area is safe bet.  Did the Coleman route on Baker yesterday via Grouse Creek/Heliotrope. No snow at all at trailhead  Unfortunately a bit late to avoid bushwack to get on snow. Lots of fresh mid mountain from past weekend. Quite mushy from appr 5700' to 8000'. High winds kept things firm higher up. Roman wall was as good as corn skiing gets. Went out the trail route. Nice run down the gullys leading to trail beginning zone.
Last Thursday tried the south TH of Baker and accessed Scott Paul Trail then to Squak Glacier. Far more snow there. Could not even drive to main parking area. Lost the trail a few times as trail invisible but was able to ski to car upon return with some extended walks in between.
Always seems to be far more snow on the south facing south trailhead than the Nooksack drainage north facing Glacier Creek area. Would like some of our weather experts to address that factor.

I remember the issue of a lack of snow on the NW side of Baker coming up in a past thread. As for why that happens, the first idea would be that the SW side is more perpendicular to the wettest flow, but that doesn't seem to me like the reason. I think the same phenomemon is evident on St Helens where the Coldwater Ridge area melts out in April yet the lower elevations on the south side of the volcano can have deep snow into May and June. Maybe on Baker it has to do with atmospheric flow influences by the Twin Sisters? Maybe it is a vegetation cover and soil porosity issue? I don't know...

Shasta also has a similar effect. Last year we skied both the south and north sides in June, and the south side had far more snow.

It seems to me this is a direct orographic effect of prevailing winds carrying lots of moisture and snowing more on the south side of volcanos than on the north. Volcanos are large enough to modify the weather on small scales, and significant variations in the weather/snow around volcanos is fairly common (eg Paradise vs Crystal).

Speaking of low snow levels........ I went over Chinook yesterday and it was snowing at 10am with around 3" new. I was picking up my kids from grandma's house in Yakima so I had packed all our snow gear and on the return trip we did some snowboarding for a couple hrs. There were no other ski or board tracks to be seen. Conditions were very fun, still about 1"-2" left of the new stuff on top of the old.

Lake Tipsoo at 10am Sunday
