Shuksan Info was created by lakeAffected
Hi,

Were flying up next week (Wed) and had hoped to ski Shuksan via the Sulphide.  Since the normal approach road is closed, I've been looking into other possibilities accessible from the Mt. Baker highway.

Becky mentions a Shuksan Creek variation that follows a bench SE to intersect the Sulphide at 6500'.   Anyone done this or no how suitable it would be for skiing?

Other alternatives would be the White Salmon Glacier or Fischer Chimneys.   Anyone know current conditions on the White Salmon - especially for the approach?  For the Chimneys, how difficult would it be to climb/descend with skis (on back probably)?

Any info or recommendations is greatly appreciated.   This will be my third attempt.  Hoping for better weather this time!!!

Thanks,

Stan

I don't know about the alternate approach to the Sulphide but I did the White Salmon route a month ago (see April TR). I'm guessing the route is still in good shape, but the approach is probably pretty melted out and brushy. Good luck!

You should check out cascadeclimbers.com for more access and TR info.

Here's a recent TR of skiing down the White Salmon

The Fisher Chimneys are not a difficult climb but having skis on your back won't make it any
easier. Check cc.com Trip Reports and search for Shuksan TRs

Thanks for the info guys!  I got my wish and the weather was fantastic - although a bit too warm for my friends to attemp the White Salmon who thought the objective danger would be too high.  So instead we free soloed as a team up the Emmons on Rainier and skied that - much safer ???   The skiing was not the greatest, it went from ice to slush with mimimal corn in between but the views and exposure were spectacular and I was very happy just getting down safely :D

We spent the weekend up at Mt. Baker ski area checking out the Table Mountain area, Shuksan arm and the two double blacks at the resort - great fun!  The views there are so incredible!  I would have loved to give Shuksan a go but the Sun, heat, and Rainier seemed to tap our energy.

Our appetite has been whetted for the White Salmon though - we'll definitely be back!
