Dynafit Ski Crampon Question was created by Bigtree
I'm new (this past winter) to Dynafit bindings and would like to purchase a set of compatible crampons for some spring time mountaineering but can't finding anything on-line with respect to sizing.  The bindings are mounted on a pair of K2 Shuksans with a waist width of ~ 77 mm.  Can anyone advise on how much side clearance is required and how much is too much?

Thanks.

I think they have an 82 mm crampon which should work fine. I use Voile's new permanently fixed crampons and love them. They have a small plate which mounts directly to the ski and attaches the crampon. The difference is that they do not lift when the boot is raised, making for bomber purchase but also create more drag on the track. But, if you need crampons, drag usually isn't a big issue. They install easily without taking off the ski but the ski top must be wiped free of all snow. They also come a wide size for up to 110mm waist width. Hope this helps

Unless you know for sure that you're not going to follow the Fat Ski Crowd (I did!), consider getting the wider crampons from Dynafit -- they'll work fine on the Shuksans.

EDIT -- sorry, not from Dynafit, from B&D Ski Gear. See here:

As a seven year dynafit user, I would strongly recommmend staying away from the dynafits. You want fixed not float for the steeper slopes. I used to have Rainey fixed and were far better. One thing about the Voile (not yet seen in use) is that it seems you will always have a mounting post sticking off your ski under the boot. True users? Also currently no extra mounts available for additional skis. The b&d one seems best option unless you can get your hands on a Ski-Alp.
One thing not yet tried is to have one of the old dirtbag tele pvc tube heel lifters under your boot to hold the crampon in place when the dynafit high heels are engaged. Any one try that?

The Voile mounting plates are small and only rise upabout 3/8" off the ski.  I mounted mine about mid boot.  They can also be mounted forward near the toepiece or even in front of it for better grip when high stepping.
