I just called the ranger station and they said the road is snowed in to about 10 miles from the trailhead. Thanks for all the other info. I think the trip might have to wait a bit because none of my friends want to skin up the road 10 miles.
You might want to consider skiing from the sno-parks east of road 8040 (smith butte??). There is a route utilizing roads and the Aiken lava bed that avoids all forest.
