BD Nunyo ski question was created by thomas
Hey
I'm a longtime lurker and currently a snowboarder, but I am Looking into starting to ski for climbing. Im trying to find a good begining setup, both to learn on in a resort, and to use in the mountains, and I stumbled across the post for BD Nunyo skis and Look Nova 10 Alpine Lifter bindings for 99 bucks at backcountryoutlet.

This seems like ascraming deal and perfect, I just have a few questions, first and foremost being if this is a good setup for what I want. Other than that, would I also have to purchase boots with this, or can I use my Koflachs.....Im a little unsure about ski bindings, there seem to be so many types. Thanks a lot for all your help.

If you want to become a skier you will have to get AT (or tele) specific boots that provide the kind of stiffness to drive skis usuable at a ski resort. If you are only concerned on the approach you can use one of Silveretta's bindings, your Koflachs and some approach skis. I use my Scarpa AT boots with my Sabertooth crampons for ice climbing but I am a skier who occasionally likes to climb ice and can't justify the expense of buying a full blown climbing setup. It really all comes down to your priorities.

I'm equally curious as to whether or not the deal is worth jumping at. From both advice I've gotten (Thanks!) and my own research, these skis are definitely on the narrow side of what's presently in vogue/perhaps appropriate for our snowpack. I'm not budgeting for the rest of the AT setup until early summer or so, so I'm content to lurk in wait for good quality used skis if that's a better choice for local BC conditions. I'm not apt to be taking on super steep runs at present, and I'm more interested in predictable and friendly handling than ripping my way down the hill, but it's absolutely clear to me that mountaineering would be more fun and perhaps safer on skis than my present snowshoes.
(That said, I'd definitely be interested in taking size ~14 US AT boots and matching bindings off someone's hands if they're trying to get rid of them.... )
Thanks!

that same $99 would go a lot further if you bought a used ski alpine rig off of craigslist instead.... and if you are wanting to get into the backcountry, then don't spend money on a ski with alpine bindings...save your money and get some AT bindings. just my two cents.
