Folks - here is a bit more about how it happened. Garth
Hi Everyone -
Many of you may have already heard the sad news, but I just found out that
Ed LaChapelle died yesterday. He was a giant in our field, and will be
missed by all. In recent years Ed and his partner Meg would travel around
the western U.S. every winter, skiing at some of the smaller ski hills.
Bridger Bowl, and a visit to his friend Don Bachman, were always on his
itinerary, and I - as well as the Bozeman avalanche community as a whole -
certainly enjoyed and appreciated his visits.

From Bruce Tremper:
Here is a good writeup on Ed's death. Sounds like he was skiing with Knox
Williams and Art Mears when it happened. Wow, what style that guy had. I
hope I can die as an old man while skiing with my good friends, as long as
it is NOT in an avalanche.

From Don Bachman:
Ed LaChapelle passed away yesterday in Colorado. Knox called with this sad
news last night and Art Mears sent this (portion) email. Service pending,
probably either Alta or Seattle.
Ed really enjoyed the interaction he had with everyone up here in the
Bozone – and we’ll miss him.
Hi Don,
Ed died this afternoon at 3:30PM in the Salida hospital. He was skiing on
an excellent powder day at Monarch with me, Paula, Meg, and Knox. We went
in at noon (Ed was cold), experienced chest pains, was given oxygen by the
ski patrol, and transported to Salida where his condition quickly got
worse. He died within about 2 hours of reaching the hospital.
He was doing what he really wanted to do on his last day. We all enjoyed
each other's company on a knee-deep powder day.
Regards to all,
Don Bachman
