Can anyone provide any information on backcountry skiing around the anthony lakes area in eastern oregon? what is the best way to enter - via a trailhead or the ski resort? Any suggestions on which diretion to take off and how long the approaches are would be appreciated.

I'm looking to spend about a day and a half up there doing some skiing.

My son (11 then) and I spent a couple of days there two years ago, toured and lift skied one day each. Our tour day accessed not far from the ski area (Anthony lakes) we were heading up towards some glades a person had recommended -road ski, then trail, then the snowpack got a bit thin under the trees cold (10 or so) and time turned us around.
It dumped that night 12-18" and we spent a great midweek day inbounds with fresh tracks ... a Friday I think it was. Cold but snow was quite "Utah like" real pleasent local folks we met in Baker city.

Looks like some turns in the BC with a good snowpack, I think there is a snowcat operation around there some of the time

bit of a drive..

cheers

Go to www.wallowahuts.com and email Connelly Brown; he knows lots about the Wallowas.

The ski area will do fine as access. As I remember, there are groomed x-c trails that can be used to aid access to the area behind the ridgeline of the ski area. It is possible to do a mountainous loop and return via the ski area. Angel Basin is the touring area.

Actually Anthony Lakes is in the Elkhorn Mtns and about 115 miles from the town of Joseph (The Wallowas). If you are new to the area you might want to buy a ticket and tour from the "resort." Within 15-20 minutes hike/skin off the top of the chair is essentially lift served extreme skiing (cliffs, chutes, etc.). There is some incredible terrain there and riding the lifts (two total) gives you the ability to view many touring options, scope out the conditions (look for natural and man made slides) and stay safe. They are open Thurs - Sun and holidays. Tickets are $35 a day and Thursdays are half price. The best lodging options are usually found in Baker City. Check out anthonylakes.com.
