Where to go when Avy conditions are HIGH? was created by climbinghighest
I was reading the avy forecast, which is high for the next couple of days
, and came across the speal about how even when the danger is high, there are still safe places to travel in the mountains. So I thought why not post, and get some ideas.
Anyone know any good spots to go when conditions are considerable or high?
I usually go to heather ridge when conditions are high, due to an abundance of tree runs.

I hear Yodelin, in the trees, is a safe spot during high avy danger but have not been there myself.

Not to be a stick-in-the-mud, but my understanding is that if the trees are spaced enough to ski through, then there is no safety margin to be found (aside from simple anchoring). Morever, the thought of being in a slide in tight trees...well, at least it would be quick and painless, eh?
Hyak is a great high danger tour. Not really BC, but fun all the same, and the patrollers never hassle anyone.

Hyak is (or would be) a good call, but they will be
running lifts this weekend
. We skinned up the main run edge last weekend, and only got chided a few times :
but nevertheless, probably not what people are looking for as a tour option on days the lifts run.

although gladed slopes (like yodelin) are often a good place to start when looking for safe backcountry destinations during high avy danger days...its also important to pay attention to the terrain ie- the angle of the slope.
look for destinations that are relatively mellow, or at least have relatively mellow terrain above the area you're skiing, so you won't run the risk of dealing with 'death from above'.

You won't get me to tell you where I specifically go...that's your job to decide, especially if the avy danger is high, it's your ass if you die...anyway...
Some general rules of thumb when I pick a ski spot when things are high danger:
1. Go where you have been before. This is not a day to explore. Even if it's listed as a mellow tour, it could be subject to avy paths that you would want to know about in advance.
2. Treed runs are where it's at, even ski trails can slide under the right conditions.
3. Stay as low as possible (again, generally speaking).
4. Watch the telemetry and take a drive to where the snow is safest. We live in a great state where a two hour drive can bring to a radically different snowpack - from East Side powder to North Cascades fluff to Central Cascade homogenous snow. Be a slave to the weather, it will tell you just about all you need to know.
Enjoy! A day in the BC is much preferable to a day at a ski area anytime, no matter how high the danger. Just be smart and keep your wits about you.
