Kudos to Charles was created by markharf
I've been out wandering the hinterlands again (Senegal, Casamance, Gambia, Guinea, now Mali), and have occasionally checked in to lurk here and dream of less arduous lifestyles.

I know that Charles went to a lot of trouble in setting this site up such that it would load quickly on slow connections, so I thought I'd mention that even in the most remarkably inadequate circumstances (one particular day in Labe, Guinea comes to mind), when none of the news or email portals will load, Turns All Year comes up reliably. I don't really have any idea why this is, but I do know that it's deliberate, and I wanted to say that I really appreciate this level of effort and concern.

Hope all are enjoying immensely, whatever the New Year is to bring.

Mark

What's your busines, out of curiosity? I read an article on ski areas/some BC in South Africa if you get down there.

I spend bits of time in Africa for the pure, unadulterated fun of it: no business involved. I've now been four times, for three weeks, plus one, three and seven months. It's interesting, challenging and life-altering.

There is indeed skiing in South Africa, as well as some backcountry reported in Morroco, but nothing comparable to what we've got here.

Somehow I missed this when it was originally posted. Glad to hear that the site loads well even from a slow and distant location. I think that the modifications I originally made to the forum (removed most graphics) help, as well as the forum software being well designed (no flash, no java, very little javascript). The current web host, although not without problems, seems to generally have a speedy network and servers. I know that when I ftp into the server, uploads and downloads are substantially faster than with the previous web host. I recently had one of those free "site reports" run and the report indicated that the speed of the TAY site in general was in the 77th percentile, meaning faster than about 3/4 of all sites tested.
