I'm currently using the Voile avy-tool pack
.....

So, as I said earlier I'm pretty happy with my pack...but...I'm thinking of trying a panel loader / clamshell design.  Did you get the AvyTool Pack locally?  I like the looks of this and the Life-Link RandoX as they both are lighter than most and seem to have 'clean lines'

Thanks

I have had the same day pack for almost 15 years now. It was made by a small company in Salt Lake City. It is by far the best pack I have ever purchased.

Go to www.vortexbackpacks.com/

They have a sippered opening on the panel that faces your back. You have two ways of getting into the pack and with this opening, you don't even have to take the pack off.

Here's the commercial

This is second most popular pack of choice for ski patrollers, snowboarders, ice climbers, rock climbers, speed hikers, spelunkers, and photographers. As with the 1800, you've got all that you need in a tight little package. What more could you ask for. A dedicated shovel pocket. Axe loops. And full hydration capabilities. This pack has an incredibly comfortable suspension system and two entry points. Yes, two entry points. You've got the main entry zipper across the top of the pack as well as a back panel access zipper that you can use without taking the pack off your body. That's right, just slip out of the shoulder straps and spin the pack around.Features

2200 cubic inches of capacity
top and back loading ability
full hydration capabilities
aluminum frame stays
shovel pocket
9 points of compression
weighs in at 3lbs $149.00

Today was the first day using my new Osprey Switch 26 and I'm
very impressed. Just the right size for day touring and it's clear
that the designers at Osprey were paying attention. The feature
layout works well.

More testing is in order but unless I find something that the trip
up Jim Hill didn't reveal it is well on its way to being the best
day pack I've owned.

Excellent...
