How many tay streakers are there? was created by Telemon
With the cruelest month of the year behind us, I am wondering how many active followers of the turns-all-year philosophy are still amongst us. I know that there are individuals who have never submitted a "resume" and that about one third of the skiers listed on the home page have retired. I am not aware of any other British Columbians maintaining a monthly streak; please correct me if I am wrong.

I get strange looks from most people when I try to explain my passion all-year skiing. I am interested in hearing the reactions experienced by fellow tayers. Some of you have been marching to this drum for a lot longer time than I have. I know that there are some of us who insist that they would be out playing in the snow every month in any case and that no silly streaking rules motivate them. I also know that most of us are not limited to only one self propelled outdoor sport and therefore must maximize the choices with our available free time. Other than injury, what would it take for you to break your streak?

Hi Telemon,

I'm an Oregonian currently working on a 10 month streak (11 hopefully by next weekend).  I would be on about 24 months, but a back injury forced me to miss several months last year.

Other than injury, the only thing I can see stopping me from snowboarding every month would be if my wife and I have a baby.  We are planning for possibly sometime next summer/fall.  If all goes well, I should be able to plan around that (especially with Timberline only a 2.5 hour drive away) and get at least one day in on that month.  Other competing interests (in the summer) include rock climbing and backcountry bowhunting.  The bowhunting trip makes September tough because I'm gone for a couple of weeks in the Idaho wilderness.  Also, salmon fishing on Oregon's coastal rivers in October is hard to beat when the weather's right ;)

I must say I get a kick out of the reactions from the general public; I don't think this aspect will ever get old for me and I'm personable enough to stop for a few moments & explain that it is possible to ski year round in the great state of Washington. I have a big enough passion for the mountains and the outdoors in general that I'm not doing it for the streak, but simply because I like to ski and be on snow as much as possible.

I think of other athletic endeavors as conditioning/training for ski mountaineering (i.e. the more involved trips) as well as supplementing the sport by doing something active when I'm not in the mountains, and not something that could replace skiing all year. However, if I were forced to give it up, I would at least have basketball, soccer, cycling, my regular gym routine and hiking all as options to fall back on.

I started doing it not for the streak but because I wanted to ski all the time but eventually when the numbers start building up it does take on a life of it's own. I'm up to 34 months which is just chump change compared to some but after such an effort to get to that number it does motivate me to keep it going.
What I find interesting are those that have built up huge streaks ( in the 100's) and then just let it slip for a month. Why ? A sudden attack of maturity and common sense? There's no room for maturity or common sense if you are a TAYER and it must stop!

My streak nearly came to an end due to knee surgery. Between job changes I wasn't able to keep my doctor or my same inurance provider, so I never got it done. As a result, I should hit 100 months in January (i think). So, for good or bad, I keep up the streakin'. Mostly, I think, because I like to do something outside the box. Plus I find myself in the most peculiar places in search of snow.
