I think the "above the normal high camps" rule really means "beyond the normal high camps". In other words, if you traverse across the glaciers beyond either Muir or Schurman (regardless of elevation), you're probably supposed to pay the fee too. For example if you ski Paradise-to-White River traverse or the Foss-Molenaar high level orbit, you should probably register and pay the fee. For some reason, I keep breaking this rule. You are unlikely to get caught doing this, as long as the rangers stationed at the high camps don't see you coming or going, but if you needed a rescue, it wouldn't look good.

I was going to correct the first few responders yesterday, then I thought I'd just shut my big mouth.

A perfect example of not going above the high camps, but being required to have a permit, would be approaching Liberty Ridge via Carbon Glacier. Without ever getting near 9.5k in elevation, there are several miles of glacier travel. Not that the original poster would be going there right now.

Careful, Lowell! I used to be a rule-breaker myself. Then I started getting messages from some Gauthier character, so I finally paid the fee, to the detriment of my cherished outlaw status. I feel so much less glamorous when I'm on old Tahoma now. *SIGH*
