I just got back from hiking the old Cascade Crest over Red Pass to Goldmyer, scoping it for a possible ski tour. Verdict: it would be awesome for the first 2/3... and I dunno after that.
PS. The trail from Red Pass to Goldmyer is soooo nice. It's soft moss and clear of all obstacles. I've heard oldtimers still fix it up from time to time.

It's nice to see this thread up again.
I looked again at the Chinook Pass map that Jack posted. I never noticed it before but the route drawn toward Deadwood Lakes is one that I've done a few times (going from the lakes to Chinook Pass). That route crosses a pretty darn steep slope--spooky in anything but very stable conditions. And when it's stable, it's spooky because of fall-and-slide potential.
Yet I wouldn't be surprised if they actually followed that route in the old days. Those old-timers were tougher than we know.
