Ideas? was created by climbinghighest
I've decided to play around with the visual basic program I got back in school. However I'm having trouble coming up with some program ideas. I was thinking of a program that easily lets you log your back country trip reports and save them to a document for future use. Like when and where you went, conditons found, hazards, weather, trail conditons, etc... Does anyone have anything else they would add or any ideas in general?

Adding what kind of year it is or % of norm would be helpfull for apple to apple comparison from year to year. Most of that data is available from Snotel and can easily be extrapolated for an area that is off the NCRS Snotel radar.
Living in the central Willamette Valley and Having a few areas that, in some years, dont come in, I have come to respect the % of norm data available for assessing conditions below 7,000'
Good luck.

- Calculate total vertical feet hiked up and skied down, and distance for any date range.
- Use calculations to create a stack chart against a background graphic of Mt. Rainer, Mt. Everest, etc.

How about something in a different vein altogether, like a meal planner that lets you list meals and ingredients with amounts, and then produces a shopping list for you (of course collating all the butter together etc)? You could start very simple with this and add quite a bit of functionality as you want to stretch your programming skills (e.g. saved meals that you tend to repeat, plan for # of people, etc). I might actually use such a tool if it were well designed and implemented, and it isn't just a repeat of what you already see on Turns All year, Cascade Climbers, NWHikers, etc...
