I just got this from Dorothea Driggers she's been pestering them for weeks now. She usually skis it early May on her birthday

"I just talked to the head ranger at St Helens about climbing/skiing to
the crater rim.
Was told that they have postponed making a decision on whether or not to
open the restricted zone (above 4800 ') until July 1ST!!!!
So we can forget about skiing it this year, wouldn't be worth it by then."
Dorothea

This is not to say that snow enthusiasts of all types aren't poaching. I also have heard rumors that they were.

I was under the impression that it has been reopend.  Am I wrong?  One of my friends went down there for a kite-skiing gathering, and he said that the kiting got rained out but he climbed & skied it the next day.

Corey, St Helens is definitely not open. If your friend skied it he did so illegally.

I'd like to hear from more people that have "poached" it or heard a rumor that someone else has poached it. Are the sources of these rumors credible? How many people have done it? If you get caught, can you claim ignorance?

I hear some skier deviants poached it back in 2004.

I think the real legal issue here is whether the authorities in charge think they will be held accountable if they announce that the mountain is open, and then some dumsh*ts go kill themselves in the crater, and their families freak out and demand blood sacrifice from the "evil government."

There's a kite-skiing contingent in washington? Do tell!

Didn't I hear a story about Lowell Skoog skiing up St. Helens in the early 80's after the eruption, wrapped in a bed sheet to escape detection?  Comments, Lowell?

Be forewarned Lowell, some of us here are impressionable. ;)

(the story is on his website; in the Southern WA section; he called the bed sheets "cloaking devices" which sounds kind of cool in a star trekesque way)
