Chains on 4x4? was created by Mjölnir
I just moved up to washington from cali. From what I've heard, WSDOT supposedly requires chains on 4x4s crossing the passes during storms. Whats the deal? Is this really the case- will I get turned around in my toyota pickup w/o chains? I've never seen this happen in the sierras.

I've been turned around for not *carrying* chains (when they have road blocks set up and they check to see if you're carrying), but I've never (in 8 years) been actually required to put chains on a 4WD.
It's been a few years since I've seen them set up roadblocks and check that you're carrying.

I saw one day this year when chains were required on all vehicles including 4WD. That was on Stevens Pass. That was the first time I had ever heard of chains being required on a 4WD. Typically, they use traction tires advised, traction tires required with chains required on vehicles over 10,000 GVWR, and Chains required on all vehicles - Except all-wheel drive. Thought the WSDOT website says that they do sometimes require chains on all vehicles including 4WD.

Here is the WSDOT web site
www.wsdot.wa.gov/winter/
that might give you some more info on chains etc.
Like Philfort, I have been asked if I was carrying chains in my 4X4, but have never had to put them on, yet.

I was glad I had mine trying to extricate myself from stevens pass upper parking lot. I was sliding out of control and used them to just get outta the lot and avoid taking out 10 cars on my way. Just like alotta things, nice to have when you need them, but hope you never do. At least if the roads are that bad the skiing will rip.

For god's sake don't mention Subaru's in your post regarding 4X4's and chains. I did in a post a few weeks back regarding some trucks getting stuck and putting on chains and was flamed and roasted good by the Subaru
Jihad Society
