Info on the Rubies? was created by skip
I'm having a hard time finding bc tour info for the Ruby range in Nevada. Can anyone steer me toward a good source? I may be heading that way in mid-March, and I'm hoping to get in a day trip or two.

Ideas about where I can find information and/or personal recommendations are welcome.

many thanks,
-s
There's at least one regular on Ttips.com who lives nearby and skis a lot in the Rubies. He's always sounded sort've lonely and eager to share information (don't quote me). I'd try a search in the main forum followed by a posted query.

Hope that helps.

Mark

i used to live near there and access is somewhat difficult. you can drive up Lamoille Canyon where foot hikers hike in the warm season, but it looks like it would be pretty hard for touring in the winter from there. the odd thing about the range is that when you drive around it on the circumnavigating road there are ranches in all of the base areas and they are private property and fenced off. At the south end of the range where the road goes across the lower elevation looks like the best place to think about touring, but it would depend on the coverage etc. i would suggest driving around the road from the east side and maybe talking to one of the ranchers about access and just get a good look at it yourself. Maybe there are places for hunters to enter but i never saw any. good luck. it only takes about an hour and a half to drive around it.

I have skiid there a couple of times in the past.
We used to drive down from Park City, Ut.
Some of the ranches will let you access the range through their property. They are generally nice people.
If you do go up fron Lamoille canyon road, beware of avalanch runout zones. It can be tricky. This time of year should not be too bad however.

My buddy does snowpack analysis there and he said they are doing ok, but not super this year. This may make the access a bit easier for you.

There are a couple of heli outfits in Elko as well. If you want to go that route.
Don't forget to go to the Star restaurant!!!! It is a family style Basque eatery and it rules!!!!!

Have a great and safe trip. Be sure to let us know how it goes.

Bryan C
