I haven't seen that particular cabin but be aware that most cabins that existed way back when have been burned down by the forest service. Seems they consider it trespassing on public property. Go figure. ???

Oh~

T'would be nice to have a running backcounty ethical belief much like other wilderness areas, where-in cabins, lean to's etc. are left unlocked and availible for those who may find themselves in a needy situation. Of course many folks make it out there that simply dont respect such a virtue. I wanna move to canada. ;)

I stumbeled upon a old cabin up at eagle lake, (north of barring mtn) I wonder if it ramains standing, pehaps its on private land?

I came across a big (at least 10'x10') A-frame structure in the Three Sisters Wilderness about ten years ago. It was several miles from any trail in the middle of nowhere. Amongst the usual camping supplies found, we also saw a few oil drums, and the strangest thing of all...tripwires around the structure, and the wires ran back to some kind of cradle that looked like it would hold a rifle.

we took a bunch of pictures, and got the heck outta there, turned the shots in to the forest service...i think they went back to burn the place down.

Yikes~

Some wacko's in central Oregon cascades eh? its to bad.

A buddy of mine has built a hut in the colorado B/C, well hidden from the FS. Highly frowned upon by the FS but quite nice for those who dont spill the beans. Sleeps 4, Wood stove and all Picture window too nice spot, 20 Feet up in a few trees in the summer, have to dig it out some winters. Also about 6-8 miles from any established summer trails, but not booby trapped. glad you had your eyes open upon your discovery...

I think the USFS would be receptive to well thought out hut/yurt placements. Think of things like temporary, removable structures that could be placed at logging landings or summer trailheads well beyond winter plowing. This would increase access for us but be less of a footprint impact on the land that would trigger agency concern. Placing any kind of structure without permission will most certainly be removed when found. And rightly so since we all have to live by the same rules. If clandestine structures went up everywhere anyone wanted the places would get trashed. Vegetation damage, dropping trees for sturctures/firewood, etc. I believe there is opportunity for winter shelter on FS land that can conform to "Leave-No-Trace" principles. Non profit ventures like Mt Tahoma Trails would be cool if we organized. Keeping costs minimal is a value we should encourage. The WSTC, Mountaineers, WTA etc. could be approached. Anyway, food for thought.
