dynafit tlt 4 or scarpa matrix was created by fheimer
Thinking about getting either dynafit TLT 4 or Scarpa Matrix, Would like a boot the skis, tours, and climbs equally well. Any experience with these boots would be appreciated.

I ski on the Matrix...comfortable for going up (minus a recent bad-rub event) and stiff enough for the ride down in all conditions. I do a mix of in-bounds and bc skiing. I'd say go with what fits your foot best. I have an extremely high instep and decently narrow foot, hence why the Matrix is good for me.

Good luck!

~Lara
The TLT4 is in a different boot genre than the Matrix. It is lighter and less powerful. The comparable model to the Matrix is the Garmont Megaride. If you want a more powerful Dynafit-compatible boot decide between those two. If you want to go on the lightweight end of things decide between the TLT4 and the Scarpa F1.

good info, thanks, I was considering the matrix to replace my TLTs after I saw them on sale, but I don't want a stiffer boot, so I can rule that out and save myself some $$!
Regarding Jeff Hubers comment: "The TLT4 is in a different boot genre than the Matrix. It is lighter and less powerful. The comparable model to the Matrix is the Garmont Megaride."

I don't know about the TLT4 but in November I tested the Megride and Matrix side by side. I prefered the Megaride and subsequently bought them. During the "test" I soon found that I prefered touring the MR with both top buckles completely unlatched from their respective bales. Since then I have climbed with them this way ~15 times in wet corn to deep fluff and haven't had a problem with snow entering the boots around my snow pant cuffs.

For both boots I tried every combination of buckled/unbuckled/bales hooked-but-not-latched/etc configuation I could think of. I did this while climbing various angles; steep, shallow, cross slope striding and slightly descending. In all cases I thought the MR with unlatched buckles provided the freest movement of my ankle and least resistance to fore and aft movement while touring (= less tiring) as compared to the Matrix. I believe the MR liner tougue configuration is responsible for this. I then skied the bejesus out of both of them on a steep cut up poweder run at Crystal, (Breakover), as well as some groomers. The Megaride clearly gave superior control while skiing downhill in loose snow and hardpack. My comment at the time was that I could almost live with them as a lift skiing boot. I was impressed.

Unfortunately I ended up smack dab between shell sizes. Since I intend to ski them 99% back country I opted for the larger size. They ARE loose and if I wanted them for lift skiing I would be sorry. However, they are very comfortable on this (almost) ancient skiers knarled feet. I think I will continue to be glad of this as I am contemplating climbing and skiing Rainier, Adams & St Helens this spring. So far I am able to buckle them tight enough for good downhill control. If you are in this tween size think hard about what you will be using them for.

Good luck.
