"Snowboarder charged with negligent homicide for deadly collision
The Associated Press
JACKSON, Wyo.--; A teenage snowboarder has been charged with negligent homicide in a fatal collision with a skier at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort a year ago.
Greg Doda, 17, of Crownsville, Md., ran into Heather Donahue, 29, of Shrewsbury, Mass., in the Laramie Bowl last February, according to court documents.
"The impact knocked Donahue out of her gloves, skis, poles, hat, goggles, neck warmer and catapulted her 25 feet down the hill," sheriff's investigator Mike Carlson said.
Carlson said Doda, who was 16 at the time, was going 35-60 mph when he struck Donahue. Though Doda was wearing a helmet, Donahue was not and died of a head injury.
He said investigators were able to review a video of the collision. "
This is disturbing!
How common are collisions between snowboarders and skiers at ski areas now? Is it just my family that's had bad luck?
My brother-in-law was nailed by an out of control snowboarder last year and was knocked 20 or 30 feet down the hill, and my father (who is still teaching skiing as he nears 90!) has had a number of near misses and one or two minor collisions in the last few years as OOC boarders careen right through his classes. I hate to think.....
I must be getting a slanted view; I can't imagine our experience being tolerated as the norm - - by the insurance companies at least.

I think collisions with snowboarders are more due to the fact that they are younger than being snowboarders.

There just needs to be more education for younger skiers and boarders.

I ski and board.I was hit last year on opening day at Baker in a controlled , patrolled, slow zone.Nearly broke my femur.Had lots of close calls , especially at Whistler.Vocal request to slow down doesen't seem to work for me .Unfortunatly, for self preservation I've had to resort to pointing my ski poles and avy. grips directly uphill at the reckless party and make eye contact.I now recieve a wide berth and avoidance. So sad .As a former pro hockey player I have the conviction to back up my actions.I have no sympathy for strong, young ,reckless individuals endangering innocent bystanders.I just haven't seen much,if any enforcement of the skiers responsibility code. Keep your head up ! X

It does not matter which form of travel the rider was on, its how aware the person is of his or hers enviroment. Some people have a solid backround in resort ethics and others do not. This sounds like a case of aggression mixed with bad action.

I don't think its fair to call it a snowboarder problem. I have had many skiers think I am their slalom pole and come way to close. I am terrified at times when I see skiers and snowboarders careening towards me or my wife. Skiers tend to go even faster. Why do some people think its ok to ski right towards you like a slalom gate? one hooked ski and you are outa control. I Like the skipole defense.
T

I agree with other opinions that it's not just a snowboard problem. I've been snowboarding for about 10 years, and can recall numerous times I've been nearly hit by an out of control skiier. I think it has more to do with age/experience than the way a person rides. Typically younger people tend to push themselves more while they still may not know their limits. People need to always remember to ride in control and pay attention at all times. On a different note, has anyone heard of any collisions with someone who was riding with an IPOD blasting in their ears? This seems to be coming more commonplace at resorts, and I'd assume this could be more than a little distracting..........
