I disagree with you RG, I think mtn. bikers do belong on some wilderness trails.

I don't believe that a bicyclist will do more damage than an equally respectful horseman. In meadows you stick to the trail, with mud puddles you go through the center to not widen the trail. These are universal good trail manners.

Mechanized vehicles are prohibited not wheeled, and until someone here give me a good answer to my original question, skinning looks to be hard to defend in the wilderness, which is a scary thought.

I think to be fair we should go the non-motorized designation for wilderness and manage it like they do hikers and horses now. Give people another reason to get off the couch.

Galen,
One thing to think about is that skis and skins are very often carried into the wilderness by human power.MT bikes are not.
If we wan't to go to the logical end of your reasoning we outlaw crampons, ropes, belay devices, and climbing hardware.
My own opinion is MT bikes are a good breaking point.
I do like your idea of getting people off the couches.
I might change my ideas after I've explored all the trails in Zillys and others guidebooks.
See you on trail somewhere
