Based on the location of your pain, you might have trochanteric bursitis. The trochanter is the "knob" on the outside of the hip. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, fluid-filled sacs that cushion and lubricate joints.

Anti-inflammatories can help with the inflammation. Avoiding the causative activity until the inflammation goes away is the usual advice. Which means you now have a great excuse to ask your ski companions to do all the trail breaking until you are better.

The attached photo is of the Skier X rated tip extension.I designed these in the early 90s to overcome the difficulties of breaking a deep snow trail. They recreate the ski profile of pre lift served skiing, when all skis had to be equally adept at ascending and descending. Reducing hip flexor strain is a major by-product, as well as being able to travel faster, farther and more efficiently.Feel free to recreate your own as I seek no monetary compensation for this intellectual property and ask only that you contribute to your local avalanche center in relation to how helpfull they are to you.The material is ultra high molecular weight polyethelene, available in many forms throughout our culture.Lots of used materials are available, please recycle.

I think you've mis-diagnosed, if it's on outside of hip it's probably the piriformis muscles. I've been rehabbing from broken femur at hip, so this is familiar territory.

Try this stretch: "Standing outer hip stretch (also helps with tight iliotibial band): 1. Stand vertically next to a wall so that you can put your left elbow on the wall, with elbow-to-hand resting against the wall, hand up vertically from elbow.
2. Cross your right foot in front of left foot at ankle.
3. Keeping weight on left leg, lean toward the wall so that you stretch the outside of left hip, while keeping butt in and stomach muscles tight.
-- Repeat up to 8 times. Repeat on opposite side.

and this stretch with a rope, bathrobe tie, or jumprope:
1. With rope in one loop, wrap the bottom of the loop around one foot and ankle.
2. Lie on your back on the floor, with no space between back and floor.
3. Keeping stomach muscles tight, and using the rope, slowly pull your leg up and across your body so that you feel a full stretch on the outer hip. Hold for 5 to 25 seconds. Concentrate on keeping stomach muscles tight and lying flat on floor.
[These are from Renee Daniels, Straighter, Stronger, Leaner, Longer.]

Another great stretch:
Lying on your back, hold your right knee with your right hand and your right ankle with your left hand. Maintaining nuetral spine, push your knee toward your opposite shoulder while pulling your ankle toward you. This is basically trying to move your knee onto your opposite shoulder.

Also try strengthening:
Roller skating, inline skating and ice skating are ideal x-training.
A PT can demonstrate some good strengthening excercizes that I can't fully describe in words.

Don
I agree with Don-it's the piriformis, it seems. Lots of PT and stretching works great!

~Lara

I got something similar this spring, and I think I've had it before. It wasn't constant pain or anything, but it was in that exact spot - whenever I was carrying a heavy load or lifting my legs, it almost felt like my right hip was going to blow out! Sometimes I would take a "bad step" while hiking, and that was painful. Just very weird.
I attributed it to weak muscles, and it eventually went away after repeated carrying of heavy loadsThis is pain located on the OUTSIDE of my leg just below the pelvic knob. Based on some of the links above it sounds like hip flexor pain is in the groin.
So anyone know the pain I'm talking about?
