For snow pits, I use a pruning saw replacement blade with one end wrapped with tape (handle) and the other hacksawed off next to the teeth and filed or ground smooth. A wrapping of tape around the cardboard wrapper that came with the blade works well as a semi-durable case. I learned this cheap trick from a Canadian guide.

Even Cheaper solution, Get a metal strap about 2 inches wide from Home Depot or Lowes. should be under $3. Get a 2inch diameter dowel like you would use for a closet. Dowel doesn't need to be any longer than 6 inches. Cut dowel in half longways. Put metal strap in between and secure with screws and tape. Use hack saw to cut teeth in to strap. We used these two years ago and built some pretty sweet igloos up at Paradise on MRNP. Under $10 and if you lose it or it breaks who cares.
