welcome.
Don't get to frustrated, anything that is new takes a while to get used to. After a while it will become second nature. I have been on a split for I think 7 years now and I am almost never the last one ready at a transition even with skiers. If you are going with people who are getting angry with you for taking to long, get new partners, or (my favorite) break trail on a pow day(this will be much easier for you) and as they get to the top take the best line. They will stop complaining, I promise

Thanks for the responses everyone. Some encouraging words and good advice. I think the trick now may be shaking enough cash out of the ol' wallet for a split and an avi course.....(it will take some avid shaking, to be sure)

And just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that anyone I was with actually complained about my slowness in transition--I was just curious if i could get a few skiiers out there to say what they really think. On the mountain, as always, the further from the ski-lodge and the lift-lines you stray, the friendly people become.

One last thing (that probably deserves more attention in a dedicated split forum)--for those of you (like philfort) who stay in split mode for some of your descent once you've made the switch, any tricks to be had there? Ever staying in splitmode with the skins off? Are you attempting tele-esque turns, or are you just sort of downhilling it as best you can? Also, I've heard that "skiing" down on a splitboard is the best way to break hardwear. Any thoughts on this?

Always with skins off!

Tele-turns would seem to be asking for trouble. Parallel turns are much easier, less effort, and (I assume) put a lot less stress on the pin.

As for breaking hardware - hasn't happened yet (knock on wood). I can see it happening maybe if you took some nasty twisting falls or something, so, uh... don't do thatEver staying in splitmode with the skins off?
