Forecast does not make sense. Ideas? was created by jdclimber
I like to think I am reasonably intelligent, however I am having trouble with the current forecast for the Central Cascades.
For Example:
Sunday: Mostly sunny. Freezing level 9500 feet. Afternoon pass temperatures in the mid 20s to lower 30s. East wind in the passes 5 to 15 mph.

I hear no talk of an inversion or a layer of warm air. Last time I checked 20-30 F is below freezing. The passes are at 3000 and 4000ft. Which should make the freezing level a good bit below 9500ft?

An inverted layer could explain this (I think), however I hear no mention of it, with an inversion layer like this, there would be multiple freezing levels, no?

Ideas????

East winds at the passes will keep the surface cold while it warms above. Look at the telemetry at Stevens and Snoqualmie, it's warmer at the top sites than at the passes.

Tomorrow, the difference between Baker/Paradise and the passes will pretty dramatic.

Here is an explaination from Mike Fagin of Washinton Online Weather:

425-450-4901
www.wowweather.com

Why is the freezing levels at the surface for Stevens and Snoq Passes?
Since very cold air is trapped in Eastern Washington and since cold air is generally very dense an area of high pressure forms over Eastern Washington. Thus, the pressure will be higher over Eastern Washington relative to Western Washington. Furthermore, wind generally blows from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. So for this weekend there will be easterly winds and these easterly winds will move some of the very cold air in Eastern Washington near Stevens and Snoq Passes.
