Nitrile Gloves:

Here's a little trick I thought I might pass on that ounce for ounce will help keep your hands warm in wet conditions better than anything else I know.

Carry a pair or two of disposable exam gloves that will fit over your liner gloves, and use them when the liners might get wet. I've used various weights of vinyl gloves like this for a number of years and for me it's the real secret to keeping my hands warm skiing or hiking when its say 36 degrees and pouring rain.

I also use them taking skins off, setting up and taking down my tent, shoveling snow, etc.

Disposable vinyl gloves however are not that strong. They snag easily, and don't fit all that well either. The green disposable painter's gloves are tougher, but they are clumsier and get sticky on the inside once you wear them making them hard to get on again.

I've just found a much better solution; nitrile exam gloves instead of vinyl ones. OK, so it's a new trick for me.

They are stretchy like latex gloves and yet they are extremely tough. They fit better too. (Vinyl does not stretch much so you have to use oversize gloves.) I have not seen them in smaller quantities yet, but a box of 100 is not that expensive.

One caveat; instead of buying powdered gloves, get the unpowdered ones and powder them yourself. Manufacturers now use starch instead of talc at least for gloves that might be used for medical purposes. Starch plus sweat makes for a very sticky glove that's hard to put on again. Instead, put the gloves inside out and powder with talc and then turn them right side out. This works especially well with nitrile gloves; they will slip on and off quite easily if you have the right size.

Oh, ---- yes. There is one thing. If you ski with others you should steel yourself to unflattering comments about wearing purple gloves. Sorry, that's the only color they come in. Tell'em you're a paramedic on a rescue mission.

Nitrile gloves come in a lovely shade of smurf-blue, as well.
