When do you start counting ski days? was created by OldHouseMan
On the way home form a wonderful day at Meadows we discussed..."What time of year do you start counting ski days if you ski all year?" and "When do you stop counting for the year?" Do you do an annual count(Jan 1st-Dec 31st), start counting when the first snow falls of the season, or start counting at the Fall equinox?

I guess it doesn't really matter, I've never kept track, but I thought it was kind of interesting.

Aaron

If memory serves, I seem to recall that snow study folks seem to start the "snow year" in September. That always seemed to make sense to me.
Seems like it kinda makes it more "official" if you go with the scientific types, if ya know what I mean.

however, I know most folks do their count starting in November b/c that's when the ski areas open. Then you can count your ski days during the "regular season" (Nov-April) and continue to count through October. As to when to start counting your streak, anytime you want!

~Lara

My ski year begins with the seasonal snows. Fresh snowfall which melts back to nevé belongs to the previous season; if it sticks around, it's the beginnings of a new snow year. Specifically, this year's Labor Day freshies melted off and thus were added to last year's total; yesterday's extravaganza was the first day of the 2005-6 season.

Not that this makes any difference to my pleasure, abilities or willingness so suffer horribly in service to a few minutes of downhill bliss.

I have started counting from Jan 1. My rationale being that my ski season lasts all year not just the winter months.
So far , my trip to Muir on Sunday 31st October was my 40th ski day of the year with only 8 of those being lift days and the rest all BC.
My goal is 50 for this year. I have to get 10 days in Nov & Dec. Not bad for a full time working stiff with wife and kid

I've always started counting on Jan 1, too. It seems like the most logical way to count the number of days skied in a year. The only problem is when I'm skiing on Jan 1, and somebody asks me how many days I've skied so far this year, and I have to say 1...
