The Seattle Times ran a story about Carl this morning. The last line is unfortunately worded. You might get the impression that there won't be a memorial service. There will definitely be a celebration of Carl's life. We're still working out the details.

The story includes a nice picture of Carl, which I believe was published in Outside magazine. I still get a chuckle out of that photo, because it was shot on the summit of mighty Gasworks Peak, approximately 50 feet above sea level. ;)

I was deeply saddened by the news of Carl's accident. I only skied with him a handful of times, but each encounter left a deep impression on me. He was a true Northwest adventurer, and his energy and artistic vision were exceptional.

My condolences go out to Lowell and the Skoog family. It was clear that he was a great brother, friend, mentor, ski partner, confident, and fellow adventurer.

Carter

My thoughts go to Lowell and the rest of Carl's nuclear and extended family. The joy we feel in sharing in someone's life mirrors the pain we feel upon losing them. From all I've heard and read about Carl, your loss must be deep.

I had hoped for several years now, based on seeing Carl's photos and reading bits and pieces from his trips, to meet him in person. This news is an unfortunate reminder to me to seize each day that passes, as they are more precious than I sometimes realize.

Like many, I know Carl through his work (and Lowell only through TAY and the NOAA field trip). But whether we knew him pesonally or not, his loss still leaves a very large hole in the backcountry world.

My prayers and condolences to his family and friends
Bill DeYoung
