Found at Mt Baker mystery was created by galen
We spied a pair of skis from the top of Table Mtn today. They were laying on the north side of the mtn toward the top of the scree fields, between hourglass and what we call the nose of Table Mtn.

To get there from the East (Artist Point) you have to go around the north side of Table Mtn (above the nose), stayng close to the bottom of the cliffs that decend from the top of Table Mtn. This spot is very steep. We decided to go get 'em and after a bit of scrambling I got to them.

Here's the wierd part, they are an alpine setup and both boots were laying about 10 feet below the skis.

Can anyone slove this mystery for us?

We carried the skis and boots out along with a bunch of garbage. There was an amazing amount of trash just above the nose and a lot of it was old pull tab type cans. There was one cool Fresca can that had an aluminum pull tab top with tin sides and bottom.

What's bizarre about your mystery is that I had a very similar experience climbing Alpental last weekend. We too found a ski (owner has been found, lucky guy) and tons of discarded beer and soda cans. We were like soda can archeologists, since many were pre-poptop style and brands that no longer exist. Who are these people from generations gone by who discarded their beer cans? Does this environmentall unfriendly species still exist, or have they too gone the way of the pull tab?

And, perhaps someone can answer this, when did the old pull tabs disappear? That is to say, without carbon dating the cans we found, can anyone tell me old those Oly and Rainier cans are with the pull tab openings?

We too found a ski

Yeah but TWO SKIS WITH BOOTS!? In a very inaccessible area? What, did they decide to not ski out after getting themselves on a super steep slope? Did they have other boots? Snow shoes? Did they crash so hard comming off of the Table Mtn. cliffs that it blew off their skis and boots? This is just too weird for me.

And, perhaps someone can answer this, when did the old pull tabs disappear?

I remember pull tabs in the 70's.

I'll keep the skis and boots around for a while in case someone recognizes this situation. Then I'll grind the skis and mount some non-rusty bindings, never skied anything like 'em before.

Punk
