Anyone skiied Pico de Orizaba recently? Thinking about going in December or January, but I haven't seen any reports more recent than 2001.

I'd go earlier than later if you have hopes to ski. By December/January it is into the dry season down there and the Jamapa glacier can be really icy. I climbed Orizaba a few years back in mid-Jan. and the glacier was far too suncupped and icy on the upper 1000ft to look like it would've provided enjoyable turns.

By the way, if you can't get a hold of a real topo map of Orizaba (I've heard they are hard to come by) drop me a PM- I have a file of a scanned copy of the map that was passed along to me which I could pass along to you too...better than nothing, right?

Senior Reyes is pricey by Mexico standards, but his compound has safe parking if you have a rental car and the food and 4x4 transportation was great.

La Malinche is a 14,000 ft peak about a two hour drive away with a nice gov't ran resort at 10,000ft...its a good place to go to for a couple days to do some acclimitization hikes before heading straight to the huts on Orizaba.

Have fun!

Yeah, you want to go earlier in the year. Basically, the summertime is the rainy season in most of Mexico, and it really doesn't precipitate much the rest of the year. So, you want to go when there will besome semi recent snow. We went in late September - early October, and thesnow was good, but we almost didn't have any good weather at all!

I think the only time to go would be late September - Mid November or so. As mentioned earlier, Sr. Reyes is more expensive but the food there was really really good.

Thanks for all the info. Don't know if I can get together a trip in time to count this as Oct turns, but I'll try.
