Did a UFO crash-land on top of Mt. Adams? was created by Jeff Huber
Or did it just make a quick stop to pickup some minerals and water? Of course neither. But Darrly Loyd was nutty enough to buy (he eventually cancelled it) a plane ticket to check this out. I find the story pretty funny. The photos are attached to the email below.

----

From: Darryl Lloyd [mailto:longshadow@gorge.net]
Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2005 8:54 AM
To: Friends of Mount Adams; new Friends of Mount Adams
Subject: A UFO did NOT crash-land on top of Mt. Adams!

Dear Friends,

I was going to keep mum about this flying saucer story, but as August comes to a close...what the hell...

Three weeks ago Dave Tinapple from Ohio called, convinced he saw a round metallic blue-gray object 50-100 ft. in diameter near the top of Mt. Adams. This happened about 9 a.m. on August 5th, while the NW was in the midst of a 100 degree-plus heat wave. Dave was a passenger on an airliner flying at about 17,000 feet southwest of the mountain.

He sent a poor digital photo which I magnified and enhanced (attached). It shows something oval reflecting sunlight below The Pinnacle at about 11,800 ft. on the SW side of Adams. Hummm, looks interesting, so I called the local flight service and booked a plane. In the meantime I dug through my Mt. Adams slides and found an air shot of the summit taken from the southwest in Sept. 2001 (attached). My photo clearly shows a circular depression in the same location as the "crashed UFO." The oval reflection in the enhanced Tinapple photo matches reflections off the ponds in Avalanche Valley east of the mountain (visible above the summit icecap in the Tinapple photo). Therefore, what he saw must have been a meltwater pond in clay-rich hydrothermally altered rock, bluish-gray in color.

Case solved? Not in Ohio! Tinapple emailed me this:

"I don't think your photo identifies what I saw. For
one thing it looks like there was a lot less snow when
you took your photo. The lake in your photo sits down
in a low spot. The object I saw sits high enough on
the ridge that I saw shadows below it. Once again,
what I saw was metalic and perfectly round with sharp
edges. The center of it was a different shade of grey.
The center was light grey while the rest of it was a
bluish grey.
Are you still going to fly up and look?"
Dave

I told Dave that I cancelled the flight and explained:

"...the deeper center of the pond would naturally have a different shade of gray than the shallower areas. It could look metallic if it had a thin sheen of ice and the edges would appear sharp. What I'm saying is, there's now strong evidence that nothing metallic - or a UFO, unfortunately - on the snow near the summit of Mt. Adams. Sorry.
Darryl "

Dave's answer (note his opinion highlighted in red):

"If what you say is true then a photo taken tomorrow
should look just like what I see in my photo taken
friday. Sort of a one dimentional water body. I am
convinced that what I saw is multi-dimentional.
I did some enhancement on my photo and printed it out
on glossy photo stock on my HP Photosmart printer and
it's clear that the object stands out from the
mountain and is not part of it. I've offered to share
half the cost before you even asked me to. I didn't
even mention ownership rights of the photo if there is
something fantastic up there because you seem like a
reasonable person. :-) If it's still there by
tomorrow it probably crashed there. If it's not there
it's probably because it made only a quick stop for
water or minerals. I trust you will be guided by your
sence of curiosity.
David "

There was a lot more dialogue between us, such as:

"You are no longer open to the possibilities and that
takes the fun, excitement (and the quantum physics)
out of the mystery.
David"

Then on 8/10/05, David Tinapple wrote:

"I just spoke to a ranger at the Mt Adams ranger station
and he has had four people talk to him about seeing
unusual things of a UFO nature since last friday.
Dave"

Well, it turns out that all four reports, including one to the Yakima Sheriff's office, were from Tinapple and no one else. I told this story to a friend, George Earley, who writes a column for UFO Magazine. You might read more about the Mt. Adams flying saucer "mystery" in a future issue.

So who's going to climb the mountain and bring back the evidence? Fame and fortune awaits!

Seriously, I'll report on real Mt. Adams issues next month, after I return from the Canadian Rockies.

Darryl

Chair, Friends of Mount Adams
1025 State St.
Hood River, OR 97031
(541) 387-2217

Photo from Tinapple:

Lloyd's photo
I guess there is a UFO center/group or something like that in Trout Lake. My friend Cyril met some of those folks while he was at Breitenbush. Rumor has it the Mt Adams area is popular with Aliens.

They must have crashed there before 1998, as it shows up on terraserver as a prominent semi-circle:
terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.as...0&X=3078&Y=25589&W=3

Clearly a conspiracy/cover up - and all those folks who have skied NFNWR are in on it.
