Northwest Mountaineering Journal, Issue 2, Summer 2005

The 2005 issue of the Northwest Mountaineering Journal is now available on the web. See:

www.nwmj.org

This issue has feature articles about rock climbing, ice climbing, alpine climbing, high traverses, mountain photography, and influential Northwest mountaineers. It includes reports of new climbing routes, first winter ascents, and first ski descents in the Cascades and Olympics. It also contains highlights from Mount Rainier and North Cascade National Parks.

I'd like to thank everyone who contributed stories, photos, and information for this issue, both for your contributions and for your patience as we assembled this issue over the past several months. I'd also like to thank the great team of volunteers who edited the journal and the folks at CascadeClimbers.com and the The Mountaineers who provided invaluable support.

We hope you enjoy this issue and will begin looking forward to the next one.

Awesome, definitely above par!

I really liked the piece on Wolf, and more specifically the portion on kayaking (I didn't know that he came up with the class I-V or his part in boating around the area). I also agree that the sport has leaned more towards the difficult than the easy, but mind you it's more of a perception than a reality. I enjoy the easy stuff now and look forward to making multiday trips on some of the rivers he explored.

Otherwise, everything looked great.

As always,

Thanks for your efforts...

Replied by Lowell_Skoog on topic Re: NW Mountaineering Journal, Issue 2, Summer 200
Thanks Jason.

I struggled with how to handle the part about whitewater kayaking. I wanted to include Wolf's concerns about it, because he has mentioned them to several people (including me) and I think it's an important facet of his personality. You're probably right that the reality of kayaking is different from the perception, but I think the perception is what Wolf has been most concerned about. Thus his emphasis on terminology (e.g. "river touring") when he was active in the Washington Kayak Club. I won't try to argue about whether he's right or wrong, but I wanted to record this part of who he is.

Very classy publication yet again. There is so much material there, I haven't gotten around to reading it all yet though!
Steve F. did a great job with the site design too.
