Emmons next week .. worth it? was created by Jerm
My Rainier via Emmons attempt in June got bagged due to bad weather, but it all seems to be coming back together for another go next week. Anyone have any beta on what kind of snow conditions to expect? Should I bring skis or will it just be sun-cup hell? I'm thinking I should, given my low qualifications for a ski day (frost counts) and how much I hate walking downhill.

i was up there two weekends ago. The inter glacier was looking pretty ugly two weeks ago, the toe of the glacier has spots where its almost melted to bare ice the full width. the two crevassed areas could be easily end-ran.

the emmons wasn't suncupped, actually looked really nice, and above emmons flats the few crevasse crossings could easily be hopped. The snow looked like it would've corned up nicely by late morning from 13k down...above that was progressively thicker, bumpier icy garbage.

If you don't mind hauling the extra weight of ski gear and the weather was warm, I bet you could at least get in a few thousand feet of turns on your way down the emmons and manage to survival ski whatever snow-ice junk is on the inter glacier.

I went up there with hopes to ski it, but my non-skiing buddy and I were the last to snag permits on friday night, so no permits available for the ski partners who were to arrive saturday morning. Thought about skiing it solo, but after helping with a crevasse rescue on the way to Emmons Flats, I wasn't feeling sporty enough to climb-ski it alone, so just opted for the climb with the crowds instead and left the skis at camp.
My wife and I hiked up on Burroughs Mtn yesterday and had great views of the Inter glacier. The bottom section looks pretty bony, all ice. You'll want crampons on that part, and maybe even a helmet as it looked like alot of rocks were sitting on it.
The Emmons looked alot snowier, but still some crevasses opening up there as well.

We were on the Inter a couple of weeks ago and turned around on the 3rd or 4th crevasse crossing. The turns were nice, but it was getting towards time to rope.
