Climate change, global warming, whatever you want to call it seems to be coming up a lot here so some may find this site interesting:

www.realclimate.org

A friend pointed me to it a few weeks ago. From the main page:

RealClimate is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists. We aim to provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary. The discussion here is restricted to scientific topics and will not get involved in any political or economic implications of the science.

This is a great site, and puts current news in context. Dr. Steig is one of the contributors, and a great researcher/prof. at UW.

I recently learned about a U.W. mailing list that sounds interesting. Here's a description:

climateupdate -- Climate Impacts Group mailing list

The climateupdate list serve provides a means for individuals to receive periodic research updates, meeting announcements, and other information related to planning for climate variability and change in the Pacific Northwest from the University of Washington's Climate Impacts Group.

We anticipate light usage of the list but feel that it is the most effective way to reach interested members of the Pacific Northwest resource management community. We hope you find the information both informative and helpful.

I signed up on the list a week or two ago and received my first message today:

The water supply situation in Washington's Cascade mountains is unfolding as one of the worst in at least 50 years. A special workshop sponsored by the University of Washington's Climate Impacts Group will describe likely flows in the next 6+ months using a variety of new state-of-the-science prediction tools, and experts will discuss the implications of the evolving drought for the region's water resource needs.

The workshop, which will be held in the Visitor's Center at the Arboretum in Seattle, is free and open to the public but attendance is limited.

for more information, agenda, and to register, see

www.cses.washington.edu/cig/outreach/washwateroutlook.shtml

We hope to see you there.

I don't plan to go to this meeting, but it seems like there might be interesting information distributed on the list occasionally. My impression is that it's not intended as a discussion group. To sign up, go to:

mailman1.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/climateupdate
