MRNP-ski run names was created by Scotsman
Was skiing at MRNP on Sat and Sunday. Met a lot of folk and talked about various areas we had skied that day such as Golden Gate, back bowl off Mazama ridge, 911 gully etc. and I realized averybody had different names for various areas around Edith Basin and Mazama Ridge.
For instance I was describing to someone where I was skiing on Saturday and they said that was the 911 gully? I have no idea if it was.

Has anybody got a photo or a map that they have marked up showing the accepted names of these various areas so I can educate myself. :)

Sounds like a kind of "Rosetta Stone" for Paradise, Chris.
Something like that would probably be, uh, ah, like, well, nearly priceless, wouldn't you think? :)

Hey Scotsman-

Good to run into you and "no name Mack" at Mazama Ridge last Saturday (do you think we can get "telemack" to stick to that lurker?). Sorry for misspelling your handle in the TR.

Yours is a good question... For example if where we first met is the "back bowl" what is the bowl to the SE of it called (the one you and Mack took your last run in)? Is that the "back, back bowl" Or did we actually meet in the Mazama Bowl and you cats skied the back bowl? I'm not sure now...can anyone clarify this?

The prior weekend Amy and I skied a line to the east of Bundy's; when I asked JW what that line is called he replied "name it." So we're calling that one "Amy's Glory" although I'm sure it's got several other names too.

Being a relative newcomer who tends to ski with the same people regularly, I often find myself describing areas in fuzzy terms like: "that place where we got into that sweet powder on Super Bowl Sunday, where you lost your sunglasses." "Or that area we were in above Paradise in a whiteout when we had no depth perception and we skied to that rock we thought was several hundred feet away and it was actually only one turn out.."

Yes, names would be nice and sophisticated too. I think you may have found yourself a project here.

Hey, if you ever want to meet and talk about it we can do it at the place we took the picture that's posted in the trip report :)

Jeez ,Scotsman that must been you on the G3s I talked to you near the foot bridge.I was waiting for some of our learners to come down.Don't know many Scots so I couldn't quite place the accent.
Bundys/favorite / Sweet potato/ has many names.
911 was named by Dorothea Driggers at About age 70 she yelled back to Barb "If I don't make it Call 911" The Rock pillar to the west of 911 is called "Karins Boy ".
Golden gate is specific to the summer trail there that heads due north up and out of Edith Basin.
A lot of the names were either tagged by Gary Vogt or Ed Strauss. Of Course Ron J and Gang have added a few and a couple by me and Dorothea.Gary Vogt has a "rosetta" topo map showing many names and routes. Of course there have always been added names over names due to the fact this area has been skied for over 95 years. The first skiers were from The Tacoma Mountaineers.
I have two ideas one is that Gary Vogt ought to be credited with his rosetta stone map and proceeds from any map go to him as he has been laid up with Kidney stones.
The second is that I intend to organize a "100 year ski In " commemmorating those early skiers. We are all skiing in some big tracks.
Robie
