Wow, I'm sorry to hear about the bad situation at Crystal. Its seems weird that the forest service would back such a definative and unique decision to keep ticketed skiers our of the backcountry. MRNP must have initiated the action ??? and gained the USDAs support as a whole?
Increasing limitations at Crystal seem even more strange for that Jackson has the same neihbors (forest and Park service) and has gone to the other end of the spectrum. If you enter Jackson resorts backcounrty to the north into Garnet Canyon you are easily enabled entrance to Grand Teton National Park.
Are skiers in numbers key?

MRNP recently re-clasified the boundary adjacent to Crystal as PRISTINE WILDERNESS in hopes of closing the boundary. Only 108 skiers a day are allowed in the Park from Crystal's SUP. MRNP for years have been concerned that the numbers would increase to over 1500 skiers a day skiing to 410. In reality only 10 or even 20 ticketed skiers/boarders on a good day make the whole tour to highway 410. With the Crystal expansion the Park is afraid that someone is going to start a shuttle system in the park to tow skiers down 410. It is unrealistic since you have to have a permit from the Park to do commercial hauling of folks--so how are you going to have a commercial business if you are operating in the Park without a permit from the park? Shurly the Park would shut that down. Which eliminates that concern for the park. Furthermore at nearly $50 a ticket who is going spend half of their day sking one run that you have to pole nearly 4 miles out and hitch a ride back 6 miles to the area? I hardly think they have a case. Their numbers are way off the mark.
Jackson deals with much higher numbers on a daily basis. I have been in the lineup poling out of Granite- those numbers in one good day blow away Crystal's 410 crowd of 10.
Thanks for reading my banter, but MRNP has blown the issues out of proportion and should be aware that they are misguided in their numbers of 410 skiers. And they should permit access to Public lands by anyone--
ticket carrier or not.

Joe
Are skiers in numbers key?
