I just returned from an informal settlement meeting between representatives of most all of the individual boundary closure related appeals associated with the Crystal Mountain Master Plan, including the USFS, Crystal Mountain, the NPS, and many interested parties. The result is some good news for those interested in preserving access to the backcountry.

Thanks to the good work of Joedabaker, Vera Similitude, and another whose "TAY" name I do not know, Forest Supervisor Chris Hansen-Murray of the USFS announced that he will formally recommend that the Record of Decision be modified to eliminate those conditions that imposed boundary closures between CMR and land under USFS jurisdiction. This removes from the table one of the major boundary closure issues that has been of concern to those in this forum.

In contrast, the Mount Rainier National Park Director and his lawyer did not appear willing to consider any compromise with regard to the closure imposed along the CMR/ MRNP boundary, citing conerns of "commercial extension" into the park. While we will not know for several days, it appears likely that appeals on this issue will continue through the formal process, starting in Portland with the USFS Appeals Deciding Officer.

If you have a serious interest in following this issue through the appeal process, you should contact Chris Hansen-Murray of the USFS at chansenmurray@fs.fed.us or by phone and plan to submit a formal letter requesting Interested Party status no later than tomorrow (Tues the 19th).
Thanks to all who attended the meeting this afternoon and to those who have expressed support on this important issue.

The unconfirmed rumor is that we've won: the USFS will not force Crystal to close the boundary.

Rumor confirmed. Just picked up my letter from the USFS stating that Master Plan condition REC-1 (the MRNP boundary closure) has been removed from the Record of Decision based upon the appeals filed by myself, Joedabaker, Vera and others.

Thanks to all who helped to fight this backdoor attempt to restrict access based upon faulty science.

Bring on the snow!

J.P.

So how come all those signs are still up stating that it is illegal to enter the N.P. boundary from the ski resort? Was the rumor just a rumor?
