Sun Peaks is a 6 hour drive away from my house in north Seattle, with most of it being on four lane roads . It took me six hours both coming and going with lots of stops and some snow and ice. [320 mi.] The mountain is big with over 4000 acres of terrain. It markets itself as an easy intermediate family mountain, but don't be fooled, there's plenty of good black diamond skiing . There is also a lot of affordable ski in ski out lodging.
I am lucky to know a local who skied with me on day one and showed me a lot of the good spots. This place is on three separate mountains so the tour really helped.
Sun Peaks gets a lot of moderate snow falls, so big pow days are rare, but the little dumps accumulate, don't get skied up, so powder skiing is there. It is also in a good climate zone. They don't get the dreaded Pineapple.
SP is the least crowded area I have recently skied. Almost no lift lines and empty runs. There were lots of times when there would be no one in sight on the tougher runs. I skied good semi untracked powder off piste in the afternoon of all three days. There are enough good spots to ski on white out days.
I had fresh snow on all three days, but Sun Peaks did not live up to its name.
I will be going back.
