Another sad Powder Wednsday….so sad that the crowd was smaller than last week, so sad cause it was colder than last week and the snow quality (though less) was better, so sad cause I had to ski hamster runs a lot later in the day, so sad for all the poor folks that had to ride the lift with me – but every one of them were having a not sad day! Fun, fun, fun, hamster day, no Aprils Fools about that, it was challenging early with very firm base and cold winter snow on top with not perfect vis, but the vis got better and better and the sun popped out and the snow stayed cold and the piles of cut up snow got deeper and happier and My-Oh-My it was another fun (did I say that already) day on the slopes….sounds like maybe not to many more (how did that happen?). Groomers were pretty fast and fun, Grubstake Trees had happy times for me, SnortElk area was very nice (heard about more nice than I enjoyed), West Face was firm and smooth (a little wind blown, so not as deep as other places), Ann’s run was happy when my legs finally started moving fast enough for the “deep” drops off some of the bumps, Grubstake was a challenge with the deep big hard bumps and new blanket of soft on top (grumped a lot my first run, second and last one was better, could have done more…but….) Nice and sunny up top (still cool with the uphill breeze in the Valley) when I left.
Other – Pay lot way to big again and not full when I left early, got into the parking lot way to early, but got first bucket anyway (might have to pick a spot 5 back in the line, so I’m not crammed into the back of a bucket?, gets you out on top faster!). Food was big and expensive at top as usual. A lot was not full, heard they did not have to many paying folks on the mountain today. Drive up and down was fast and happy, lots of snorting elk in the morning (but they were nice and mellow on the sides of the road).
Other other – as mentioned heard the season might end on the 12th! A week early, at least for week day operations (mechanics and maintenance folks probably need a break after their last few weeks of “extra” work. Still plenty of snow in the Valley – better than last June 1st. Powder Bowl looked pretty impressively smooth this afternoon (as did Rolling Knolls and anything up high out south way). As usual the Hamster had a great fun day – as all the folks that suffered me today – thanks to them all!
