2/10/15 - Crystal, The Kids Are Alright

First midweek ski day of the year for me - I plumb forgot public school is a thing that happens before 9am. Despite some slowdowns on the way up, we still managed to make it in time for opening bell. The morning did not disappoint, with thin fog giving way to full on sun within the first hour. Sure the terrain was limited and the snow wet & heavy, but for what it was in a season that wasn't, it was worth the pre-dawn departure and vacation time burned. By noon, the snow had noticeably thickened but was still riding fine as the fog rolled rolled back in. Bagged a number of laps with padded seat refugees, several of who were on their day off (as the chairs off I-90 were not spinning today) and linked-up with a fellow on vacation from Alberta in the early afternoon. After showing him all the nooks and crannies of GV, incl. one spicy lap in SnElk Bowl from the top, we channeled our inner ddk and hamstered laps down the soft bumps and groomed flats of the main bowl until the red coats I told us it was time to go home. After a brief social in the parking lot, we made our way down to town just in time to catch the tail end of happy hour and wait out rush hour traffic. $12 pitchers of snow cap do make for a nice finish to a fun day - even if it feels more like late May / early June.
