January 15, 2015 Snowbasin, UT was created by Zap
This is our last day on Trip #1. We spent the night in Ogden and drove about 20 minutes to Snowbasin. It was another sunny morning with temperatures of 13 degrees at the base and 28 at the summit; a typical inversion. We picked up our free lift tickets using our Timberline Fusion/ Powder Alliance Passes. The great thing about Snowbasin is that they have lots of snow machines due to the Winter Olympics which were there in 2002. There is great coverage on trails, but you can see the brush off piste in places. This week they also received 8-12” of snow and there were tracks everywhere. The John Paul Express quad and Allen Peak tram lead to the start of the Mens Downhill. There is numerous expert tree-lined terrain off the tram.
They have 2 gondolas that provide 2000vf each. There were very few skiers and the groomers were fast. Fog covered the bottom 200' feet but burned off by 11:30am. The lower half of three trails had snow-making machines making “fresh powder”. It was different to ski through the fresh snow and cut fresh tracks and then to return and your tracks were covered. We have been spoiled with fresh powder during our 11 days of skiing in the past 14 days. Jill thought I was a bit crazy skiing the powder around the snow-making machines. Do you think a Seattle skier would pass up this opportunity? We are heading home and we are bringing fresh powder to the Cascades. Whoopee.
