Blackcomb - 05/19 to 5/20 - dang wrong week! was created by ddk
Watching the projected weather forecasts for the Sunday to Monday period convinced us that big mountain skiing at Blackcomb would be the place to be, so headed up on Saturday afternoon, made record time and with easy boarder crossing. Had a nice late evening watching the mini skirted stiletto crowd from Cittas (apparently it is a tradition?), soup was Potato Leak and French Onion (very good). Sunday had a fog/cloud layer on the top 500 or so feet of Blackcomb mountain, so we spent most of the day down lower, snow was very soft from the start, no real lift lines other than Solar Coaster which had lots of tourist foot traffic. Colder and greyer than hoped for, but no precip. Sun came out at 3:30 and it was very nice in the Valley all evening with more people watching at Cittas again. Hoped for a big Monday sun fest (Victoria Day Holiday weekend in Canada), but high clouds kept things cool again, but also kept the snow quality better. Good vis allowed me to ski Pakalolo – big steep bumps, nice spring snow. Again no lift lines except for slow tourist loaded Solar Coaster. Only one slot skiable to the bottom of Solar Coaster, still easy skiing to the bottom of 7th Heaven and Glacier. Definitly more dirt and rocks showing than I remember from other late seasons at Blackcomb. Only 6 more days to ski the big lines at Blackcomb. Downloaded Wizard both days which is always entertaining dropping from the white world into the green one. Easy drive home (except from Squamish to Brittania – bad traffic light there screwing up the mass of Canadians heading home), boarder crossing was the best we’ve had heading south, looked brutal heading north. Not as sunny or warm as hoped for, but still two nice days on snow.
Soups on the mountain, cant remember what they all were, but they had Chick Noodle! Parking was easy and expensive at the Chateau, view from hour room was very nice. Party scene in the Village was full on this last weekend, glad we stayed over at the Blackcomb base.
Note - I was thinking that next weekend might be nice so a I reported the wrong days.....have noticed others doing the same stupid thing.
