Crystal - 01/31 was created by ddk
Interesting kinda day, interesting to see the impact from the big Tuesday dump, interesting to see the impact of somewhat wet conditions the last couple of days, interesting to hear some first had reports from the last couple of days. Unexpected early light snow falling at the base (not as wet as expected), really unexpected late opening – CHex started loading after 9:15 (because the upper mountain lifts were a frozen block of ice, does not explain why CHex took so long to start loading). Spent the first 45 minutes running Deer and Lower FerkBull runs, the Gondy started running at some point but the line up was past my crowd threshold. Bonus REX started loading just as I was getting ready to suffer FQex. Early in the day the fog/sun/clouds were multi layered and pretty, some bad some good, nice early views of the south side of Rainier (would have been a nice pic). Snow quality – if Crystal was a thousand feet higher there would have been 1200 feet of good quality snow. Half way down GV bowl got pretty challenging (maybe the Coombas might have liked it – maybe tomorrow). Based on that, I spent the very very short day doing soft carving turns with the AfterShocks on the groomers – except for the two good places, bumps down to Windy Pass from the front top of Crystal and the surprise bonus of a run down Frisco/Cisco old chair 5 line (only get to do that when I’m not willing to do HC, like today). Got a nice lonely bucket ride just before Noon which pretty much ended the good vis part of the day. Left extra early at 1:30, sad, got to foggy with the limited vis options even for me.

Other info – Pay lot was to big as normal, no real crowds, fairly dry day, soup was Loaded Baked Potato (looked nice), C and B lot had a few cars, 6 buses.

Hi ddk,
I don't know much about area ski condition explanations and even less about Crystal in particular, but am looking to maybe ski there on Sunday.
Are you basically saying that the ungroomed was potatoey and chunked up and that the groomers were wet and soft?   Do you think by Sunday things will be refrozen or is it possible some recent storm snow on north aspects may "dry out" with a cold, clear night or two?
This will be my first lift assist in more than a decade so any clarification would be helpful!!! Thanks for posting.
Appreciated,
John

Off piste south facing slopes have lots of left over deep "firm" ruts left over from the big dump early this week - I havent been willing to suffer most of them other than lower Green Valley Bowl which is at least somewhat "soft". Yesterday the groomers got soft, today the ones I did got soft in places with the sun (and the bumps started growing in IceFerkBerg). Areas of shady north facing slopes that get (or got today) enough traffic are or will be good. By Sunday, after tomorrows big heat wave and big Saturday traffic, things will change some for the better and others maybe not so good. I'll be up tomorrow just cause I havent done the Saturday crowd this season and the forecast says sun and heat. Normally Sunday would be my weekend day - maybe the sun will hold for most of the day...
