january 5, Snoq Summit/Hyak

#11 – 1/5/13 – Hit Hyak for opening chairs at 0850. Cloudy, but not foggy like Central and West appeared to be. Snow had been freezing rained on yesterday so off-piste was a ¼ inch crust over 4-6 of well consolidated atop another 6 if you really pushed a pole hard. Groomed runs were actually pretty fun on the front side and we stuck to there because the wind was bitter coming up the Hidden Valley lift. Hooked up with a gal patroller for 3 crust-busting runs down Roz’s. Surprisingly fun to do once I figured out to just pop hop turns instead of trying to force things. At 1020 a horde of Nordic folks slammed the lift, but there were very few stoppages as most everyone seemed to be dismounting pretty well. That was the only wait for lifts that was more than a half dozen chairs. Parking lots upper and lower looked pretty full, and the lodge was fully packed at noon. TomK & Kerry.
