Really Big 50th Opening Day at Crystal. Pretty big crowd (thankfully REX was running – most of the time), pretty big back up early on the Gondy for the morning up-load, big activity getting CHex running to continue the big crowd up the mountain – once that got done things mellowed out with the crowd dispersed, early folks getting tired and leaving or heading in for food. Really nice small lines mid day till we finally left. Really big conditions – really! Way better than expected – still rocks in places, still brush poking through the snow, but I made it through the day with only a light ptex scratch on those dang Coombas! Have I ever said I really like my Coombas – truly thank you Doug! Big winds at times, nice snowfall at times, some almost sun (or at least very nice bright vis conditions), lots of fun friends around the mountain, lots of really big fast beat up my quad burning runs from IceFerkBerg (actually nice late) to Memorial, to Sunnyside, to Showtime, to Door 1 (big fun ouch). Best snow probably was in the Valley (especially the main bowl), but GVex was running just slow enough to make me go back to REX. Good solid firm frozen ice base covering up most of the nasty things – actually kinda lucky it was there with the new 0 to 8” new light smoke on top depending on where you were. Fun day (other than the 10 minute sit on REX mid morning – almost painful mentally). Got some pretty blown quads. Had lots of fun – dang it what’s new about that. Yee Haaa….. Pay lot didn’t make much effort today, rest of A full, C kinda light full, a few wide rows in B lot….so Crystal should have been happy all in all today – I know I was. ddk

Given that Crystal Mountain opened on December 8, 1962, this would be the 51st Opening Day, right?
Assuming that the ski area actually opened at all during 1976-77.

It was a total cluster in the morning getting the crowd up the hill. Crowd was revved but respectful. Pretty much agree with ddk about conditions. Bear pits was loaded with heavy snow . The growth in traffic at crystal in the last 10 years has really outstripped capacity and planning. Someday ( fifty more years) it will be managed as the treasure deserves.

10_4 great conditions all around the mountain. Great fun watching the more showy boarders attempt to ollie the stumps till the jib park reopens. Lift capacity was the game changer today, depending on where one was in the bucket line and Rex vs GV through out the day. Not quite sure why Chinook wasn't ready to go at 9.00 Seems like the crowds were in excess of what was planned. Elk deli was geared up for crowds with Dee serving ! Chili and the worlds best walnut brownie proved a pleasant surprise. Unlimited crackers too ! Rumor has it Powder Bowl is full to the brim. Such choices Katanas or SideSeths
