January 31, 2012 Crystal - Special

Today was one of those "special" days in the mountains. I learned on the 30th that I would be going into surgery for a lung problem on February 1.  So the best therapy was a day in the mountains with your best skiing buddy.  Jill and I were surprised to find the sun blazing when we arrived with cool temperatures and not a hint of wind.  It wasn't a powder day but it was a groomer day.  I had forgotten the variety of terrain available plus the excellent groomers.  We followed the sun and as the trails softened our speed accelerated.  We ate an early lunch on top while gazing towards Bullion and Pickhandle Basin over towards the King and Mt. Rainier and pointing out areas we toured and areas we wanted to tour.  While descending Iceberg, I heard a familiar voice and saw Bob and Bee Dietz.  Bob(81yo) and Bee(75yo) were backcountry touring friends way back when.  They both have new knees and a zest for skiing that is contagious.  At 1pm the light went flat and we headed home.  It was a "special" day in the mountains.

Thanks for the report. I'm trying to decide whether to play hooky tomorrow as I type this. 3"to 5" overnight.mmmmh!.
