Feb.19-22,2010 Mt.Cain backcountry was created by Telemon
Tiny community owned Mt.Cain ski resort is the home of an annual telemark festival, which I have attended several times over the years. This year the resort snow was disappointing but the back country bowls were great. The three bowls can be accessed by Tbars. The East Bowl was not in great shape, so we avoided it. The West Bowl (Photo 1) was lots of fun, especially in the afternoon. The best adventure was the North Bowl, which provided several slopes to play on (Photos 2 and 3).

I had issues with my photos attaching. Perhaps this link will work telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=66849

Mt. Cain is a real jewel. The terrain and locals are wonderful. Do they still do the one way road ?

According to www.mountcain.com/ the road still alternates as a one way lane. We arrived Friday evening and left Monday morning without encountering any opposing traffic. Even though you are required to carry chains, I could have traveled without snow tires this year. As I noted in my TR, tghere are many reasons why this place is special to me.

Yesterday while tiredly sitting in Victoria's Solstice Cafe I was blown away to see the "mt cain backcountry" header of your TR. In hindsight I could guess that there would be a TAYist at the telefest, but I was still kinda in the Mt. Cain time warp after driving all day down island. It was my first time on the internet after spending the week up on the north end of the island and I was checking in on TAY to see how things were with snow back home when I saw your post and was transported back to the Mtn.

great pix of the north bowl! We'd been skiing with one of the locals who skied the upper part for the first time, I couldn't really wrap my brain around how big he was telling me that it was until I saw those pics, especially the one with your buddy boot'n up the hill!

totally agree with all; Mt. Cain is a very special place. We've been twice now and are a bit spoiled in that we've skied there during the week and had the mountain mostly to ourselves and enjoyed the hospitality of the local cabin owners. Both times we also managed to be there when it snowed. Last year over a foot on our second day, and this year we showed up Tuesday and had 8-10" on wed (I think it was wed. the days all kinda run together...) and 3-4" more the next day. We mostly skied freshies on piste, but went on one long tour to a north facing stash, and skied the trees down into lower west bowl.

well I suppose I should get off to work sometime this morning I'll maybe post some pix later, I think we have some nice sunset shots of Mt. Abel.

Oh yeah, I asked about the road; the one way rule (uphill only until 1 pm then downhill only) still is in effect, but since the road is now mostly wide enough for two cars to pass you're mostly safe going opposite as we did Sat. morning. From what I heard the road used to be a nightmare and the rule was needed, now the road is graded wider and not as bad. Be very careful while going against the flow and you should be OK.
