Brighton, January 23, 2010

I hope to have many more ski days like in my future. But for now today ranks as one of the best ski days of my life.

It was 19 degrees at the base and snowing slightly when I arrived at Brighton, making it up to the top by 8:15 while LCC road was closed until around 9 for avalanche control.

The Great Western, closed the previous day, was open and that's where the knee to thigh high sugar was sitting. On my first run when I jumped in I entered the white room for the first 5 turns, wishing for a snorkel as I remained engulfed in the fluff.

And that's the way it was all day. It was crowded by Brighton standards but lift lines were never more than 5 minutes (but I did ride as a single).

My body gave out around 3 but the last run was still through light wonderful powder. (It's hard to walk away when the skiing is so good but I have to pace myself--the spirit willing but the flesh weak.)

The locals and patrol all seemed top agree that this was the best day of the year so far.

Woke up this morning (Sunday) to a car covered in snow here in SLC. They had another 10 inches at Brighton last night and it's 10 degrees at the base!

I wish that I could be there and ski your leftovers but, alas, I am relegated to only boot deep powder near Rainier.

Keith, I've noticed most of your morning reports are between 4-5am.  You getting any sleep ? Or are you crashing at 9pm.  Pace yourself.

Thanks for investigating the inside of the "white room" for those of us who have been scarpening our edges.
