Just came across this little nugget...

www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/0...he_crashes_down.html

Didn't realize there was that much snow left up there.

^^^It slid off of Wy East face, which is up around 11,000 feet. There is a ton of snow up there. It slid all the way down to the bottom of the Heather lift (~5000 ft or so?). Huge, and it's pretty lucky it came down at 7pm instead of during the day. Bunch more pictures on TGR thread here:

This was a very big avalanche of the heavy maritime style.  impressive track walls at times more than 20' tall!  I've heard estimates of a crown face that went across the wy'east face near its top and continued lower on the newton-Clark headwall and onto the upper newton glacier to be horizon to horizon from the resort's perspective.   Guesses I'd consider educated have put the crown depth at 5' and up, size R4, vertical fall ~ 1 mile, & running length of almost 3 mi.

Upper Heather had great stable skiing on the way down to check out the track and debris.  Hurrah for the howitzer and our skis' compaction.  Woah to upper untested slopes.  Fortunate timing- no doubt.
